For Olivier Coipel, it’s always been about drawing. Since he was a young boy in France that was his passion and he would work on sketches and draw in the margins of his school books in pursuit of it. Olivier wanted to study drawing in high school but found himself unable to switch academic tracks in his rigorously defined education path. He had to wait until after school, when the possibilities of honing his craft in a film animation school presented themselves. Coipel's talent was obvious and he quickly found himself at the top of the class rankings. Coipel was recruited by Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation animation studio and was whisked across the world to begin life as a professional animator.
Oiliver worked on a couple of films for Dreamworks in the late 90’s but quickly grew restless of the muzzle that was put on his drawings. He wanted to draw bigger and grander - animation couldn’t provide that but comic books could. At the San Diego Comic Convention, DC Comic’s art director noticed his talent and within a short time Olivier was on board at DC drawing Legion of Super-Heroes where he stayed for three years before moving to Marvel.
Coipel’s work on the high-profile Avengers series with Geoff Johns made a name for himself with comic fans and he was anointed one of Marvel’s Young Gun Artists. Marvel then tasked him with the House of M, firmly establishing him as a key comic book artist. His next big project at Marvel was New Avengers and since 2007 Olivier has worked on the new Thor series in collaboration with Michael J, Straczynki. This is a character Olivier particularly likes and with bringing his style and quality of design, Thor is another success.
